For our seventh session, I decided
on the topic of adverbs as I thought that this would help out David when it
comes to elaboration and creativity in his writing. Rather than just giving him
the definition of an adverb, I gave him sentences containing adverbs and
defined them through their use as I felt that this would give David a clearer
picture. From there, we started going through some interactive activities that
I found online to provide more examples and increase his comfort level. Most of
these simply involved identifying the adverb. Once I felt that David had a firm
grasp on the subject, I had him write ten sentences using adverbs to ensure
that he had a handle on the receptive and productive vocabulary involved with
adverbs. After that we went through a short quiz to check his comprehension one
last time. At the end of the session we also spent ten minutes going over math
at the request of David’s mother.
