My first class observation was with Group 2B and the teacher
was Victoria Davis. She was a very kind teacher and I appreciated her way of
explaining answers so that the students could easily understand. The Agenda for
the day consisted of reviewing present tense (be/action) from the previous
class, as well as present continuous. Ms. Davis had a model on the board for
the students with Subject + to be+ verb(ing). She also had a list of adverbs of
frequency on the board (Every, Always, Usually, Sometimes, Never, etc.). She
had the students warm up by telling a partner five things about their family
using be/present tense or action verbs/present tense. I spoke with Fadia who
said she was married and that her mother was a teacher. I enjoyed the partner
participation Ms. Davis incorporated in her class, because it allowed the
students to engage with each other. It also seemed to help a lot with grammar
in use. I noticed that the students would actually try to correct one another
when there were small mistakes made in their grammar.
We then spoke about routines with our partners using simple
present tense. Fadia said she gets up everyday at 8:00, every week she eats at
a restaurant and goes grocery shopping, and she calls her mom everyday.
Everyone had a chance to go around the classroom and share their routines out
loud and Ms. Davis would correct any mistakes they made on the board for the
whole class to learn from, which I thought was helpful as everyone seemed to
get the general idea of the lesson but would often times make minor errors. As
part of the lesson we also drew three pictures using present continuous and had
our partners guess what the picture was of. I drew someone gardening and Fadia
said she had never heard that term in English before.
