For my fifth tutoring session with Felix, we focused again
on writing technique. Largely we worked on how to organize an argument in the
form of a paper and how to use the proper tone, but we also spent some time
going over the correct use of past participles in perfect tenses and as
adjectives. Felix had been working on a composition for class about places to
visit in Ecuador. One think we talked about was how “tone” is formed based on
word choice, and how the goal of that changes based on whether you’re writing a
persuasive essay or merely an informative one. It seems a little specific, but
I thought it was appropriate for someone planning to attend university in the
US. One thing I noted was that in most academic writing, the author of the
paper tries not to refer to themselves within the writing (as “I” or “we”)
because it comes across as too informal. We also went over how to form
sentences that referred to the reader of the composition in ways that were more
suggestive than commanding (e.g. “From there, you could visit…” instead of “Then
you will go to…”)
