My first classroom observation was with Victoria Davis' Writing
class. The six students, all of whom were at level 2. This session was in the
computer lab, and the students were writing a first draft of an essay. The
students wrote about something good in their lives. For example, one student
wrote about her son, and another wrote about his family.
For the majority of the class, students were working on
their essays individually. During that time, Professor Davis showed me some of
the administrative side to teaching, such as how to plan lessons on a
week-to-week basis, and how to use the grading rubric. This rubric was the
"Yes/Partial/No" version we got in Professor Kim's class. For the
rest of the class, Professor Davis would check students' papers for errors. In
addition, she made sure students knew how to operate Microsoft Word, as a few
students were not familiar with the program.
