My eighth and final session with Felix was a pretty loose
speaking exercise. The last time we had met he had several questions for me
about how the US election system worked, so I told him I would do my best to
explain it and in turn, I asked him to look up the details of the Ecuadorian
political and electoral systems so that he could be prepared to explain it to
me. When we met again, he was able to give me an informal talk about the
functioning of politics in his own country, including the political parties,
sources of corruption, and voting. Something very interesting he told me that I
had not previously been aware of was that in Ecuador, it’s actually mandatory
for all citizens to vote in elections. I continued the speaking practice by occasionally
stopping him and asking questions for clarification. I spoke to him a little
bit about the current situation in the US with the upcoming election and he was
able to ask questions of his own.
