I met with Felix Varas, a CIES student from Ecuador, to conduct
needs assessment and see what areas he needed most help with. Felix is a fairly
advanced student, in groups 3-4 for all his CIES classes. He is already
scheduled to take the TOEFL the following weekend and plans on attending TCC
and then FSU to study business. While speaking with him it quickly became clear
that he speaks fluently, although with some notable grammar and pronunciation
issues, and has little trouble with listening comprehension. I asked him to
fill out a short self-evaluation form on various skills required for
communicating in English and had him do a reading comprehension exercise in the
style of the TOEFL exam. He only got a couple questions incorrect, so we went
over those answers and any words or sentence structure he had difficulty with.
He asked for help with pronunciation of some English sounds, and I promised I
would bring material for that to our next session. The main areas Felix needs
to focus on are grammar, pronunciation, and writing.
