This was my last session with Seoha. We started off by reading a book together. She had picked it out, and a lot of the words weren’t too hard so I let her read it to me, and every so often I would read a word or page. But she did a good job for the most part and I think she really has gotten better at reading this summer. It was exciting to see her improvement. I brought a word document to this session with pictures of animals and kids that I had found on the internet. Some of them were funny, and they all showed different scenarios and facial expressions. I had mostly been working on reading with her, but I also wanted to give her a chance to practice speaking, so I asked her to tell me about the photos. She typically would respond with a short sentence so I had to dig a little deeper by asking questions like, what is the girl doing? how does she feel? After that, we made another small book together. This time it was much easier. She seemed to grasp the idea much better and was able to come up with ideas for the illustrations and text a lot more quickly. She was challenging to tutor in some ways because she was so quiet and reserved, that it was hard for me to tell how much she could understand. But she did show progress in speaking and reading, so it was encouraging.
