Jake had gone through about half of the alphabet in an
alphabet workbook by our last session. So we finished the second half of the
alphabet with him tracing the letters and practicing writing them out
repeatedly. He was really good at coming up with words that started with each
letter. I had to help him when he came up with longer and more difficult words
(like triceratops), but he enjoyed writing them out more when he came up with
the words on his own. I had in my notebook the words he had wrote from our
previous sessions. So I had him rewrite the four letter words we had gone over
without looking at them. For the most part
he was able to figure them out and write them on his own. However, he kept
wanting to put “u” for the “oo” in pool and cool, and I did find it difficult
to explain to him why the sounds were different. They sound very similar when
you say them out loud and he looked at me like I was nuts. He wrote them 5
times each though, so hopefully that helped him recognize how the word looks
when he sees it again.
