When I met Jake for our third tutoring session, he had
already picked out a book for us to read together. It was definitely too high
of a level for him to read, but he was so excited about it, it was too hard to
say no. It was a “Paw Patrol” book, and he told me that was his favorite show.
So, I did most of the reading this time, but every time I would come across a
word that I knew he could sound out, I would stop and tell him it was his turn.
He read words like “paw”, “she”, “we”, and “he”, but would pretty much refuse
to read anything more complicated than that because he wanted to get right back
to the story. I did ask him what happened in the book after we read it, to test
his comprehension of his listening, and he told me almost verbatim what we read
about.
