My second tutoring session overall, after tutoring with
Yuma, was with a 5 year old named Jake (his American name as his mother told
me) who was Japanese. He was extremely
shy at first. In fact, we had tried to meet for a tutoring session a days
before, but he wouldn’t let go of his mothers side and even started crying so
we had to reschedule. So, our first actual tutoring session was mostly
conversational, as I was trying to assess where he was at while also building a
sort of rapport with him. He hardly spoke at all at the beginning, but after he
got a little more comfortable I was able to tell that he was actually very good
at speaking English. He definitely opened up more by the end of the session and
told me all about how he spent the 4th of July and watched
fireworks.
