My second tutoring session with Jake went very well. He
opened up very quickly and soon even became a little bit of a chatter box. He
definitely spoke English well and had no problem conversing with me. He could
name pretty much every letter of the alphabet, so I had him practice writing
them as well. He would trace one and then write a line of his own. He would
come up with a couple words that started with each letter and I would help him
spell them out. Jake could sound out most words but he had a hard time with
certain ones, like “th” words. He could spell his name and did very well with
three letter words. He would sound out the word on his own but look to me
whenever he was stumped, after a little encouragement he usually found the
right letter to use on his own. “Apple” was one he thought he couldn’t do but
he eventually got there on his own. I realized it was kind of hard to explain
to a 5 year old in a way that made sense, why there are 2 P’s in apple because
with just one it would be aple with a long “a” sound. He would also write
certain letters backwards, like “E” “F” and “C”, so I made sure he traced and
rewrote them the correct way after he would write them the wrong way.
