I wanted to switch up the fifth tutoring session with Yuma a
little bit. I knew he wanted to mainly focus on speaking for the TOEFL, but I
thought we should also incorporate some other aspects of learning English as well.
I gave him the reading activity that was was handed out in our class, because
it was for a student around the same level as Yuma. I had him read it to me
aloud, because I was hoping that might also help strengthen his speaking skills
and grammar in use. The article was on Impressionism and had multiple choice
questions on the back. He did stumble on a few vocabulary words(such as
derision, virtually, luminous) so we went over those and I had him write down
the definitions before he answered the multiple choice questions. For a few of
the words he understood the meaning, but didn’t understand it in the context of
the article, so I think it helped him go over different ways in which certain
words can be used.
