I finished up the reading section of the TOEFL prep book with Djamila. We went through the rest of the kinds of comprehension questions, which included purpose, method, and opinion questions, inference questions, reference questions, questions that require you to insert a sentence, and chart and summary questions, which are worth more points. We went over the way the different kinds of questions are phrased, and what some signal words are that let you know what to look for in the text. After we read about each type of question, we did a practice problem. It was a lot of information to cover, but Djamila was excited about it and wanted to finish it all. It really seemed to be helping her and she got every question right that we practiced together.
I’ve really enjoyed tutoring Djamila. We became real friends through this, and I’ve already spent a lot of time with her outside of tutoring. Even though I’ve finished my tutoring hours with her, I’m still going to hang out with her, and hopefully help her finish preparing for the TOEFL.
