Mackenzee TS #10

Jake seemed very caught up on the length of words. Even if they were simple and I knew he could spell them out, he had a hard time getting past the fact that words were more than three letters. So for our fourth tutoring session, I came up with words that he could break down into shorter words and eventually spell the whole word (tomorrow, potato, tomato) as well as words that were similar to words he already knew. For example, he knew how to spell his name, Jake, and he was astounded when I showed him all of the different words he could make by just changing the first letter (shake, bake, make, cake, take, lake, etc.). I think this helped build his confidence in reading longer words because he started to realize it wasn’t always as difficult as it looked. After I showed him a couple examples, he started coming up with ones on his own. I had him write them all out and he tried to draw pictures for some of them with labels.
