Mackenzee CW #4

The fourth cultural workshop focused a lot on culture and education within the classroom. We each got a worksheet to check off things that were generally expected, common and acceptable from both teachers and students in our countries. There were many things that were similar between cultures, and many things that were different. Lina said that where she was from in the Ukraine it was customary for students to stand when the teacher enters the classroom, but we don’t really have that here in the U.S. Saaid said that many times in Dubai it is common for teachers to accept bribes in order for students to get a better grade, and that schools were separated by gender. We all sat in a similar manner within the classroom. There was a new girl in our group during this workshop who was from Saudi Arabia, and I thought it was interesting that she said it was considered rude for a student to look a teacher in the eye. In the U.S. it is considered polite and shows that you are paying attention when you look someone else in the eye as they are speaking.
