My third session with Felix was about essay writing,
especially use of proper transitions and the formation of impersonal statements
in English. For practice, Felix and I went over one of his older class essays
that had already been graded and returned. I looked over the different drafts
of the paper and saw he had difficulty applying concepts he used to fix one
specific error to other parts of his writing where he made similar mistakes. We
spent some time talking about how to write impersonal statements in English as
opposed to Spanish, in particular the need to use the pronoun “it” at the beginning
of sentences. In Spanish, people generally write “Is possible that…” instead of
“It is possible that…”. This was a phrase Felix often found himself using in
his compositions, so I think it was useful to go over it. Additionally, during
our discussion I realized he had little recognition of basic grammar terms
(adjective, pronoun, subject, phrase, etc.) and promised we could practice
those next time.
