For the second cultural workshop we were able to really
begin to dive into “The Culture Iceberg” worksheet. We each went around and
discussed which aspects of culture we believed were above the surface, like
clothing, and which aspects of culture were below the surface, like religious
and spiritual beliefs. The iceberg metaphor was very fitting as we learned that
there are a lot of things in different cultures we may think we understand by
just what we see, when in reality there’s usually a deeper meaning behind
everything, we just don’t typically realize it. Religion was a big part of our
discussion during this session and we all realized that our religions (or lack
of religion) can be a big reason behind many of the things that seem like
they’re above the surface, like fasting or specific clothing we wear at certain
times.
