Yuma and I worked on speaking and practicing for the TOEFL
for the fourth tutoring session as well. This time we did time it because the
TOEFL only allows 45-60 seconds for each topic. Yuma had to work on not taking
up time with pauses , because that was part of the reason he was consistently
exceeding the time limit. All of the information he provided pertaining to the
prompt was well thought out and correct. I think it just took him a little too
long to sort it all out and think about the topic as far as the test goes. This
time we worked on a prompt that asked about a favorite trip he took. He spoke
about a time he went to New York City with his family. He said he loved going
there because he’s a big baseball fan, and watching the New York Mets play was
one of his favorite memories. He had a hard time explaining, in English, about
the plays he saw and enjoyed watching. I helped him come up with the right
words to express his thoughts, but we also practiced perfecting what he already
knew (like when he saw the Mets) so that he wouldn’t get discouraged trying to
explain something harder.
