Our fifth tutoring session was a little bit difficult,
because Jake was very unmotivated and did not want to be there. All he was
focused on was going swimming in his pool after he was done with me. So I had
originally planned for us to practice writing out more of the words similar to
our previous session, but he was not about it. He always got a sticker when we
were done with our sessions, so I tried to motivate him with that but it just
wasn’t working this time. I eventually told him that I would let him pick words
that he wanted to learn how to spell, and he was excited about that. He chose
words like Pokemon and Pikachu. I had him try to sound out the words on his own
at first and then I would help him if he was very stuck. He also picked the
word “pool” to learn how to spell. He figured it out on his own and then we
also found other words together that were similar to “pool” based off of their
sounds (cool, tool, stool, etc.). Once again he was amazed at how easy it was
to sound out one word and then be able to spell a lot of other words by just
changing a letter.
