My last tutoring session was
originally supposed to be with Federico’s sister but she was unable to make it
because of a camp she had to attend that week. Therefore, instead of working
with her I sat down with her mother Carolina. Carolina had moved over here from
Columbia about ten years ago and didn’t speak any English when she arrived. She
said the main thing that she wanted to work on was pronunciation as she did
have somewhat of a thick Spanish accent. So we spent most of the session in
conversation, occasionally stopping to go over a phrase here or there. She did
show me something very interesting though, she had worked with an English tutor
in the past that used hand signals to indicate an improper verb tense or
pronunciation. This allowed her to first attempt to fix the mistake herself and
allowed me to correct her without interjecting and messing up the flow of the
conversation. It was a session in which I think we both learned a thing or two.
