My second session with Inhwa was at the Starbucks across from the CIES building. This is when she informed me that she would be going back to South Korea in a few weeks and didn't have much time in Tallahassee. She wanted to get in as much tutoring as possible so we worked for two hours with a break in between sessions.
I decided to use the same reading/listening dictation exercise with Inhwa as I did with Soongyu. It seemed to be a successful lesson with Soongyu so why not? I had her watch the video about the young man who was traveling the US visiting national parks and monuments. I then gave her a written script of the video with some blanks. I had her just listen to the video and fill in the blanks. It only took Inhwa two rounds of listening to get all of the words and phrases. We then went over the answers together and she asked some questions about meaning in the passage. For instance, she asked what it means for something to be "down the road" so I explained that it is a figure of speech that can often be literal and sometimes a metaphorical expression to talk about the foreseeable future.
After this exercise, I had Inhwa take the words and phrases that she filled in the blanks and write her own paragraph using different sentences than those used in the recording. She only had slight trouble with this but mainly in the area of grammar. She would use the wrong verb tense or her sentence structure was slightly off. I asked her to read her passage out loud to me and when she was finished, we went over the errors together and I explained why they were wrong and how to fix them.
