This tutoring session with Inhwa was on the same day as our last session because we agreed to do double the time with a short break in between. Naturally, we were still at Starbucks.
I used many of the same lessons for both of my tutees and modified them slightly to better suit their individual needs. That being said, in this session we focused on American humor. I asked Inhwa about humor in South Korea and she showed me a youtube clip of some popular television show in her country. They spoke Korean and the subtitles were also in Korean so I couldn't understand what they were saying but I was able to gather that it was a prank/practical joke type of show.
I explained that we have similar types of shows in America but we also use several other types of humor. We went over sarcasm. Inhwa was able to recognize sarcasm a little better than Soongyu could. She even understood how to use it properly and came up with a few examples herself. While they were slightly rude, they were still funny. I noticed that Inhwa's gauge between rude and funny is a little off. She is very blunt and forward and doesn't always realize when she says something offensive. Luckily, I am not easily offended.
We also went over common American joke types such as dumb blonde jokes, "yo momma" jokes, "That's what she said" jokes, and dead baby jokes. She was particularly appalled by dead baby jokes, as was Soongyu (and myself). She thought "that's what she said" jokes were pretty funny. I recommended that she watch the show The Office.
