Juliana TS#14

Since both of my previous tutees moved back to South Korea, I had to find a third tutee. Luckily, there was a student at CIES who was seeking extra help. Her name is Manal. She is from Saudi Arabia.
My first session with Manal was on July 18th. It was not like my initial sessions with my previous tutees. Manal was already very fluent in English and only needed help with very specific things. I asked her a few questions about herself and she asked some about me in return. Once we got to know each other a little bit, it was straight to business. Manal was not messing around.

We had met in the computer lab of CIES and she was working on a paper for one of her classes. I should note that she was in level 4 classes so she had a very good understanding of the language already. Unfortunately, her confidence in herself was not as high as my confidence in her. I noticed she doubted her usage often. Anyway, she had pretty much finished her paper and wanted someone to go over it and correct the grammar, so I did. For each mistake, I stopped and asked why she thought it could be wrong. In some instances she was immediately able to recognize it and fix it. In other instances, she did not know. We went over all of them. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to finish the entire paper and by the time I met with her next, she had already turned it in. I can only hope that she was able to utilize what she had learned from my corrections to revise the rest of the paper.
