Juliana TS#13

June 27th was the day of my last session with Inhwa. We decided to us this hour to review all of our previous sessions. We spent some more time reviewing certain lessons over others.

We decided to start the review in order. Our first real lesson was the listening/dictation exercise. For this, we went over some of the terms used in the video that were foreign to Inhwa. She remembered the meaning for most of them. One of the blanks was "All-American road trip" so we went over when to use hyphens, specifically with compound word adjectives.

The second lesson was on American humor. There wasn't much to review for this lesson. We just briefly went over the differences between Korean humor and American humor. Inhwa even gave an example of an American joke that she heard while conversing with another native speaker.

The third lesson was the writing and speaking exercises based on two specific situations. We went over how to give someone directions without using time as a measure of distance. We did not, however, review how to treat an unexpected guest since she did not have as much trouble with that exercise.

Our review of pronunciation took the longest. This is something that Inhwa has been struggling with since she started learning English and it is probably something that she will continue to struggle with for a long time. We went over all of the minimal pairs and even came up with a few more of our own. We also broke down the way the mouth is shaped for each sound and how to move the mouth during the transitions between sounds. This is something I have never thought about before or even tried doing so I felt a bit silly doing so. It was enlightening, though!

We did not spend as much time reviewing American idioms. Inhwa had looked up some on her own in her own time and studied many of them. There were just a couple that she did not understand and had questions about.

Finally, we reviewed the usage of "will" and "going to". We went over the four rules and came up with examples for each one.

At the end of this session, before we left, Inhwa gave me a gift! It was a traditional Korean wallet and inside she put a traditional Korean key chain. It had a little woven boot on the end of it. Apparently it is supposed to be for good luck. I was so touched. I thought it was so sweet of Inhwa to leave me a gift. She told me I was one of the best tutors she has had and then took a few selfies with me on her phone. She went back to Korea two days later.
