Gabriela CO#3

I observed Marilyn’s Group 2b listening class right after I observed Candace’s class so it was also very small due to the same reason of most Muslim students observing Eid. There were only three students in this class, and because of that Marilyn decided to do something more fun and laid-back for the lesson. First Marilyn discussed the importance of watching American tv shows and movies for self improvement and to experience ‘natural’ English. She showed them some good sites for streaming tv shows and assigned them homework to pick a show and watch many episodes of it. For our class, we watched part of an episode of Rizzoli & Isles. I was impressed at the way that Marilyn was able to seamlessly blend vocabulary lesson into a tv show. She also explained that the detective speaks much more colloquial English whereas as the forensic scientist in the show tends to use more technical language and medical jargon, which she then explains to the detective. It also. She helped them use context clues to make guesses about the characters and vocabulary, which was very helpful modeling for how they should watch tv shows on their own.
