For my 4th session with Julio, I wanted him to
write. Firstly, I didn’t have a lot of writing samples from him and I needed to
assess how it was different from his speaking. Secondly, just getting him to
write was good practice and was something he would benefit from, especially
after I reviewed it with him and corrected it. I gave him a free write prompt
that I thought was fun and would use later with Matthew. The prompt was: tell a
story about an inventor, his invention, and how his invention changed the
world. He had a very interesting story but it was very political and was more
about nonfictional government operations than the prompt I provided.
Nonetheless, I had a writing sample whose message was coherent but had numerous
spelling and grammar mistakes. I tried not to nitpick but focused on several
glaring issues in grammar use and spelling choices that changed the words
completely.
I then taught him how to organize and generate ideas with a web
diagram for a new prompt: your dream vacation. Together we filled one out. I
asked him questions about his dream vacation and showed him how similar ideas
were grouped and how subtopic details would appear in bubbles further from the
central idea. I encouraged him to use the web diagram and he wrote a short
essay on the prompt. He was definitely already showing signs of improvement in
structure and organization!
