For my 3rd session with Julio, I started by
reinforcing the parts of speech lesson with a quiz. This would prove to be
useful as he began to differentiate between verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc, so
he would be able to understand what I was building up to: subject/verb
agreement, which was essentially his biggest issue. I also wanted to focus on
prepositions again this lesson because he had cemented some odd misuses
of prepositional phrases into his productive vocabulary. I used a scavenger
hunt activity to pick out a number of objects in the surrounding area of Lake
Ella (moss, bench, folder, bicycle, etc), and then he would write a sentence
expressing its location using prepositions. He did well with this exercise, and
only needed a couple corrections. I had another worksheet prepared to bring the
lesson up to a more challenging level. I helped coach him through a
fill-in-the-blank exercise where he needed to use phrasal verbs to complete
sentences. It was difficult for him, but I felt the challenge was a good step
forward from simpler prepositions.
