Martin-TS#13
Since my other tutee and I's sessions have fallen behind, I'm continuing with my Hispanic tutee. He suggested more sessions with him, and needs more actual language (vs culture) help anyway. Since writing was something he needed help with, and lately all the focus has been writing techniques through reading, we decided it would be best for him to write a short paragraph about a topic that interested him. First, I would supervise his writing, offering support if asked. Then I would read it aloud, having him help me with the words/sentences I couldn't read. Then we went over the piece together. I would read, then stop where there would be a major error. As he isn't very proficient yet in writing, I focused only on major punctuation and grammar errors that hindered meaning. For him, both because of his level and his dislike of reading/writing, I wanted to encourage him to communicate through this medium as much as possible. The comma errors were much better this time. He seemed more enthusiastic to write about a topic that interested him. He chose to talk a little bit about his pets and their personalities, likes, and dislikes.
