For my 3rd session with Matthew, I wanted to
challenge him to write more. I knew he was smart and didn’t have any major
issues for a kid his age, but I hadn’t really found anything that was really
pushing him forward. I figured he was ready to learn how to write a five
paragraph essay, so that’s what I spent the tutoring session teaching him. We
started off with the same prompt I gave Julio: tell me about an inventor, his
invention, and how it changed the world. He wrote a short, humorous passage
about fireproof and waterproof hover boards. Next I showed him a web diagram,
and how it was used to help generate ideas stemming from a central main idea.
We used it to generate a model of how it could be used for the inventor prompt.
I also had a 5 paragraph essay outline to model the structure, including introductory
paragraph, body, and concluding paragraph. Then I encouraged him to use it for
the next prompt, which would have a timed portion for planning, and a timed
portion for writing the actual essay. After I read him the prompt (tell me
about your dream vacation) he went to work and did an awesome job. I was
impressed with how little I had to correct, but I definitely taught him something
that would help him in his academic future.
