It had been about three weeks since I last tutored Julio due
to scheduling conflicts. I could tell he was out of practice and was having a
hard time getting back into it. I wanted to give him something easy to start
back up with, but the fill-in-the-blank preposition worksheet was actually
quite challenging for him. The answers were not readily in his productive
vocabulary as I expected them to be. To provide support, I gave him a word
bank, but it became clear that he wasn’t used to certain phrases which might
seem to be obvious choices. Instead of “over” he wanted to say “on”, instead of
“behind” he wanted to say “back”. I spent a lot of time familiarizing him with
prepositional vocabulary words that were introduced weeks ago. Part of the
lesson was to have him read the completed sentence and I would correct some of
his pronunciation. When he read the word “I’ll”, he undid the contraction to be
“I will”, which I tried to get him to moderate. Overall, it wasn’t an easy
lesson, but I really felt that it was important and challenging for him to
begin using more advanced prepositions like “within” “always” and “during”. I
only had one more lesson with him after this and I wanted to make as much
progress as possible.
