This was my last tutoring session with Matthew. I started
with a free-write prompt which was: tell me a story about a man going into a
store to buy toothpaste, and try to make it have as little action as possible.
This was just to get him to try out narrative writing that was more grounded
and less sensationalized. I brought some worksheets that would be a kind of
comprehensive assessment test to check on his progress. They were mostly about sentence
structure, but included other general questions as well. I used a website called
helpteaching.com that is free and very useful for making quizzes. I quickly
graded the quizzes soon after he finished them and I was happy to see that the
things we covered most (parts of speech, subject/verb agreement), he showed a
lot of learning progress. There was still a lot of room for improvement, so I
marked the wrong answers and helped him understand why the correct answers
would apply. We spent some time at the end reading some panels from the Far
Side by Gary Larson, which I have to say, were not as funny today as they were
when I first read them. Anyway, I hope for the best for young Matthew and it
was a great experience tutoring him and his brother.
