On my 5th tutoring session with Julio (11th
in total), I wanted to make sure he knew what the parts of speech were. We had
been over it repeatedly but my tutoring sessions with him became more infrequent.
If nothing else, I wanted him to be able to know the different parts of speech,
but my real goal was to get him to monitor subject/verb agreement, which he struggled
with continually. I started with a quick refresher, and then quizzed him. I had
some worksheets that had errors involving verbs (tense, form, or agreement) and
coached him as he spotted the errors and corrected them. I explained the
difference between infinitives and gerunds, and refreshed him on the tenses.
Once he realized he knew how to spot the verb and change it to correct the
sentences, it was a moment where we both felt a breakthrough had happened. He
still needed to work on the skill, but having him correct the errors meant that
he could now hone in on a mistake and fix it when something didn’t sound right.
I also had him work on a fill-in-the-blank worksheet about possessive pronouns,
something else that I wanted to encourage him to monitor for himself.
