This was my second time tutoring David. On the last session,
I recorded him speaking for a minute. I showed him a typed version of
everything he said in the recording, including pauses, ums, and false starts. I
think it surprised him when I played the recording of what he said and that his
speaking sounded different than the way he imagined it. There were a few things
he was trying to get across that never quite made it out of his mouth, and it
was helpful for him to see the transcript. Next, I wanted to give him
assignments that would challenge him to focus and be attentive to details. I
used a reading lesson that I designed earlier for class to get him reading and
he answered some comprehension questions about the article. I had him work on other
worksheets as well that had short intensive reading portions and comprehension
questions about specific details in the reading. After that, I played him a short
clip from Indiana Jones (stealing the idol) and asked him to write a summary of
the clip. This was easy for him to do but it helped me find out what kind of spelling and grammar mistakes he was making, and we corrected them together.
