Juliana TS#2

On June 23 I had my second tutoring session with Soongyu Kim. We met at the Starbucks across the street from CIES again. I had already assessed her level of English proficiency and was able to choose level appropriate lessons for this tutoring sessions.

I started by showing her a video about a man who was traveling the United States visiting all the national parks and major monuments as well as places that he felt were quintessentially "American". I did not tell her what to look for in this video but rather just to watch it. Afterwards, I gave her the script from the video with some words and phrases omitted throughout. I had replaced those words with blank lines. She then had to listen (not watch) to the audio and fill in the blanks.

She did fairly well with this activity. Some of the words and phrases were not familiar to her which is what I had hoped for. This allowed an opportunity to teach vocabulary and meaning. I allowed her to listen to the audio three times in order to fill in all the blanks. We went over the answers together and discussed the meaning behind them. We also talked about the content of the video and about these places in America where the man was visiting and why they are important to American culture/history. At the end of our session, Soongyu commented that she liked the exercise and wanted to know where I found it so I sent her the website name:http://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/young-traveler-hopes-to-visit-every-national-park-in-america-/3378000.html

On this website there are several news articles and videos with three different versions of the piece to match the reading level of the student.
