Matt Zanis CP#6

Since we didn’t have sixth cultural workshop, I met up with a friend of mine from El Salvador who had moved here in middle school. He is now a manager at a local restaurant in Tallahassee, but said the transition to America was tough. He said he got into a lot of fights when he came to America because where he was from you constantly had to protect yourself. He also said that family was a much bigger part of daily life than it is in the US, in fact his entire family lived in the same neighborhood. One thing that he pointed out that was very different across cultures was the treatment of animals. Now he spent much of his formative years in the US, so he has a similar “pets are part of the family” sentiment to most Americans. However, he said than when his grandmother came to visit she was amazed that they let their dog inside and even more surprised that they let the dog sleep in their room. It was very interesting to see that while El Salvador isn’t far from us, life is very different.
