Martin-TS#12

When I met again with my Hispanic tutee, he was still curious about a lot of the symbolism and such that was in the Kattekoppen story. I had discussed this story in my undergraduate coursework so I was able to recap a lot of what I had learned about the story for him so that he could comment and form his own opinions on them. Basically, the biggest two symbols in the story are the Kattekoppen candies/chocolates and also the stamps on the packages a character's mother sends him every so often. They relate to major themes in the story. My tutee didn't fully understand what themes or symbols (or figurative language) was so we went over that as well. I had him practice making similes/ metaphors, etc and had him identify themes and such in some of the TV shows/video games he played. We still didn't get to the writing sample, but he learned a lot about how to analyze stories at a deeper level. It seems to have made a more positive impression on him now that he has seen most stories have much more than just "boring words" on a page.
