Marissa CP#5

This was our last cultural workshop where we, TEFL students, actually met with our conversation group in our normal location. As it was near the end of the CIES session, the students in the two speaking classes were about to begin work on their final projects. The project they had to do was a presentation on a trifold board that would essentially summarize what they had learned throughout the cultural workshops. Hassan and Ankita decided to organize their board to include some of the graphic organizers from the “identity” workshop, a number of stereotypes about Saudi Arabia, India, and the US, and some differences in how people communicate in these three different cultures (hand gestures, greetings, showing respects, hospitality, etc.). The main role of the TEFL students during this session was to answer questions for the CIES students as well as provide insights into US culture that they could use in their presentation. Sofia and I spent some time reviewing the difference between stereotypes and generalizations and helping Ankita and Hassan identify some stereotypes held about their respective cultures.
