Marissa CP#1

In lieu of meeting with a conversation partner, I attended Kyle Kaminski’s cultural workshop with his and Leslie Wagner’s Group 3 speaking classes every Tuesday for six weeks. We spoke in small groups mixed with TEFL and CIES students about different aspects of culture. The topic for the first workshop was identity. My group included myself, Sofia, and Demery (TEFL students), and Hassan, Ankita, and Djamila (CIES students). Hassan is from Saudi Arabia, Ankita from India (although she had lived in London for several years as well), and Djamila from Burkina Faso. During this workshop we had all been given blank graphic organizers where we wrote our names and several important aspects of our identity. This was a simple way for us to get to know our conversation group members better, as well as an opportunity to discuss how cultural perceptions affects how we define our personal identity. For my identity I wrote a few short phrases such as “only child,” “non-religious,” “FSU graduate,” and “introvert.”
