Juliana TS#9

My third meeting with Inhwa was really our 5th session together. All of our sessions were just a few days apart from each other, which I believe helped her because the information stayed fresh in her mind. In this session, I wanted to work on speaking and writing for very specific situations.

The first situation was giving directions. Again, I did this same exercise with my other tutee and i noticed that they both had similar trouble with it. I asked Inhwa to give directions from the CIES building to the Storzier library. It took her a moment to think about it. I had her write her answer down. She gave very accurate and detailed directions, however, she too used units of time to measure distance. I wonder if the units for time and distance are similar in Korea because Soongyu did the same thing. I explained why this doesn't always work, i.e. some people walk faster than others,  what if they drop something?, what if they run into a friend on the way and stop to chat? She understood and quickly revised her answer to units of distance. I noticed she tried to calculate it into miles but ended up using the metric system because it was easier for her to estimate in meters.

The second situation had to do with house guests. I asked what she would do if a guest arrived unexpectedly to her home. She said if it was someone she did not know, simply would not answer the door unless they were persistent, in which case she would open the door and ask them why they were there. She was very clear about not inviting them inside. However, if it was someone she did know, she would invite them inside, exchange greetings, and then ask what they were doing there. She said she would also offer them a drink. I then had her write a dialogue between herself and her unexpected guest who was a friend. It reflected what she had explained to me with some errors in grammar which I corrected with her.
