The first class I observed was Kyle Kaminski's writing composition class. This was a level 3 class, however there were some students who were level 2. Kyle apologized to me for not having a very exciting class planned that day as they were using class time to work on their essays. The level 3 students were writing essays about a piece of art they particularly liked in a museum they visited earlier that week. They had to come up with three reasons why that particular piece was appealing to them. This was interesting because all of the students chose different pieces.
I walked around and talked to students individually about their paper. I asked them questions that prompted them to think differently about the art piece they chose, in turn giving them more material to write. Some of the students asked me questions about how to express a certain idea properly. Others asked if I would read over what they had written so far and correct any grammar or usage mistakes.
The level 2 students were writing a paper about why or why not children should be allowed to watch television at home. There were only a handful of level 2 students in the room and all of them wrote that children should cut down on the amount of television they watch. I helped these students as well and answered any questions they had.
