Djamila is planning to take the TOEFl soon, so we’ve really been working hard at studying for it. For this session, she wanted to work on the listening section. She had taken this practice test before but didn’t understand why she had gotten a bad score. So we went through the whole practice test together. First she explained what she understood from the reading and lecture, and how she would answer the questions. Then, I explained some of the concepts that she was missing and tried to help her approach the essay in an organized way. She told me that she was taught to write essays by leading up to the main idea. In French writing, the main idea should be at the end, or more indirectly expressed, but in English, the main ideas is always stated right away and very clearly. That was interesting, and I encouraged her to keep that in mind and try to structure the essays as clearly as possible.
