For my second classroom observation I observed a Group 3A
Grammar class taught by Candace Warmka. She kept her class time organized by
writing the agenda for the day on the white board at the beginning of class.
The first part of the class was used for a “bell ringer,” or a short activity
designed to get students thinking about grammar. The main focus for the day was
preposition use, so the bell ringer was an exercise involving filling in
correct prepositions in sentences. Students worked quietly while Ms. Warmka
walked around, checking their work and answering questions. She used the next
part of class to go over the activity, explaining the best use of certain words
and drawing diagrams on the board to better demonstrate the meanings of
prepositions. Students spent the last part of class working on a group activity
they had begun the previous class, writing short stories in groups based on a picture
projected on the board with emphasis on correct preposition use.
