Juliana CW#2

The second cultural workshop was in the same place - the lounge of the CIES building. Kyle had us sit back in the same groups as the first session, however, my group was fairly large and there was another group of only two people so I moved to that one. In this group, there was one male student from Saudi Arabia and one female student from Saudi Arabia and one female student from Burkina Faso.

For this session, we were given a worksheet with an iceberg on it. Underneath the iceberg were cultural characteristics such as classroom behavior, clothing, gender roles, etc. We then had to place the characteristics either on the top of the iceberg or on the bottom, which delineated whether the characteristics were above or below the surface. We then shared our answers with each other and discussed them.

I noticed most people put gender roles below the surface because they are not as obvious as some other cultural characteristics. Also, gender roles may change within a subculture or even within a family or individual.
