I met Seoha for the second tutoring session last week. It went well - she is still very shy but she seemed to be getting more comfortable with me because she voluntarily asked me a couple questions and answered my questions in longer than one or two words. My lesson focused on reading and I tried to mix the two approaches to learning to read which are phonics and whole language acquisition. To spark her interest, I started off with reading a story from her favorite book. Then, I told her it was her turn to read to me. I gave her a small learning to read book. It only had 6 pages with simple sentences using three letters or less. She stared at the book for a minute and I helped her sound out the first word. After that, she got the idea and read the whole book to me with no problem. She didn't get every word right, but I could see that she was reading the letters and sounding them out. If there was one word she really had trouble with, I pulled out a wooden letter puzzle and put the letters together. Seeing the letters as specific objects that come together to form words seemed to help her read it correctly. I built more words for her to read, and worked on words that are the same except for one letter. For example, mat, sat, rat, hat, etc. The rest of the lesson I spent alternating between word phonics/ her reading to me, and me reading books to her. As I read to her, I stopped to ask questions and make sure she understood. Sometimes, I would pause the sentence and ask her to read the missing word before resuming. I felt that the lesson went well and she seemed pretty engaged.
