For our third cultural workshop, we talked about an
interesting topic: stereotypes and generalizations. Kyle went ahead and
introduced to us the difference between stereotypes and generalizations and we
went through a few exercises to get us used to identifying them. After that, we
started talking about stereotypes that we have about each of our cultures. As a
minority in the United States I am not new to this topic and I had quite a bit
to say about this but I wanted to hear what our foreign students had to say
about this. Throughout most of our conversations, we talked about how Americans
tend dress rather liberally and according to one of our CIES students,
Americans are easy to sleep with. In addition, I learned that nail salons are
owned by Vietnamese people because they are generally of short stature and they
tend to be good with their hands. This topic was quite fun to be honest and I
enjoyed talking about what we think about other cultures, although we were
careful not to talk about anything too sensitive.
