For my second tutoring session with Matthew I came prepared
with some new reading materials and level-appropriate worksheets. The session
before, I had asked him about some of his hobbies and interests and he told me
that he was part of a summer robotics club, and that he enjoyed fishing. I
thought he’d be interested in reading a little from the classic American novel,
The Old Man and The Sea. I read a few paragraphs from the opening chapter and
asked him what he thought about it, a few comprehension questions, and what
certain phrases and words meant in context. Afterwards, we looked at a parts of
speech handout and we went over some basics. Then I gave him a quiz on the
parts of speech and helped him correct his errors. Next, we worked on an “error
analysis” worksheet for prepositional phrases. I also had him work on a
fill-in-the-blank worksheet on prepositions. At the end of the session, we
talked more about his interest in science and astronomy, and I told him about
the Hubble Telescope’s Deep Field Research, which seemed to interest him, as
well as black holes and the gravity of stars. I decided that next session I
would find some books on the subject so I could keep him interested and
engaged. I could see that it was important to keep him intellectually
stimulated at every turn, and I could tell he enjoyed science and math over English.
