Selene TP-6

On my fourth session with Soongyu, we did an activity very similar to the previous one. This time, I assigned her a reading on Newsela that concerned re-segregation in the US, a topic relevant to her social welfare studies. I set the reading difficulty to "max" because she did not have a hard time reading the previous article set on "medium" difficulty. She said she read the 1,100 word article in about an hour, which makes me think she can read harder texts in the future. The summary that she wrote, however, had a lot of article errors and was very basic in nature. Even though I asked her to write a summary, she put a lot of suggestions and opinions in her writing as well. I am not sure that having her write summaries for homework is the best way to improve her writing, which seems to be her weakest suit. All I can do to help her with this is explain why her sentences are grammatically incorrect, but grammar is not my forte and I don't think this bottom-up approach is the most effective method. I will have to get more creative in future sessions.
