The cultural workshop today focused on Stereotypes and Generalizations. First we talked about the difference between them. I was intrigued by the questions the CIES students had for me and Matthew. Maria asked why there are no gun regulations in America, so we talked about the Bill of Rights and American history, as well as how freedom is an ideal in America. Djamila's questions were very hard to answer, and I'm not sure that I really even answered them. Her questions are, why do Americans have children at a young age? She was referring to teenage moms. Her second question was why are American children undisciplined and disobedient? I think that was what she was trying to ask though it was somewhat difficult to understand what she was getting at. It was hard for me to analyze American culture in regard to the teen pregnancy question. I had never thought about that before as being an American cultural tendency or why this is true. I think I will do some more research on that, and see how America compares to other countries, so that I can try to answer her question more later.
