Gabriela CP#2

The topic of the second cultural workshop was Cultural Icebergs. I was part of a new group, which was cool because I liked getting to meet new people and hear their perspective. In my group was Djamilia, from Burkina Faso, and Mohammed from Saudi Arabia. I found the topic to be pretty interesting and it helped me also to reflect on my own culture and the reasons why we do things. We spent a lot of time talking about modesty, clothing, and gender roles. Djamila explained that they wear a lot of clothing during the day, because it is so hot, and to protect them from the sun. I thought this was a really interesting perspective, because the American approach is to remove clothing if it is hot out. Both make sense, they are just different approaches. Mohammed said that in Saudi Arabia the amount of clothing women wear correlates to how religious they are and how much they love God. If they are fully covered, it means they are very devout. But Djamila is also muslim and said that she didn't see it that way at all, and it is not the same in Burkina Faso - there, your clothing is not connected to your piety.
