For my second tutoring session with Julio, I knew I needed
to work on some basics with reading and grammar, so we went over the main parts
of speech. We reviewed some of what we had started on prepositions the session
before, as well as a worksheet called What’s
the Question?. Then I gave him a small quiz on the parts of speech, but it
seemed that he had trouble remembering them. I realized he had probably never
been taught the explicit parts of speech before, only knowing vaguely what a
noun, or verb, or adjective was. We continued working with prepositions, and
though he had some difficulty wherein he would replace a word like “under” with
“inside”, he eventually added some of these prepositions to his vocabulary with
success. Then I had him read a full page from a book about animals, and corrected
his pronunciation errors when they came up. Then I read him a different full
page, and asked him some comprehension questions. He did very well at listening
and understanding new vocabulary through the use of context clues. Finally, I
read the page aloud once more and he followed along. One last time, we reviewed
the basic parts of speech again and used an earlier worksheet to highlight
specific parts of speech in those sentences.
